Ethiopia: Human rights defenders face increased pressure from new Anti Terrorism Proclamation
On 7 July 2009, the Ethiopian parliament passed the draft Anti Terrorism Proclamation, with no amendments to the original text, despite national and international mobilisation.
Further Information
The bill was passed with 286 votes in favor, 91 against and one abstention. The law allows for severe restrictions of freedom of expression, freedom of assembly and the right to a fair trial and civil society organisations fear that it may also be used to target independent human rights groups.
