Niger - UPDATE - Ongoing harassment of human rights defender, Mr Marou Amadou by security forces

On 16 September 2009, at approximately 10.30 pm, members of the national police came to the home of Marou Amadou seeking to re-arrest him. A number of human rights defenders had gathered outside of the home and demanded to see an arrest warrent. The police could not produce a warrent but waited in a threatening manner outside of the house until the early hours of the morning of 17 September.
On 15 September Marou Amadou was released on bail from the Koutoukalé high security prison following just over a month's detention for "managing an undeclared organisation." Judges in the court of appeal in Niamey earlier overturned an appeal by prosecutors, who on September 1 blocked an attempt by a court to release the defender on bail. The prosecutors argued Amadou presented a risk to public order and he was forced to stay in jail to await the appeal court decision.
Front Line is deeply concerned at the level of intimidation by security forces in Niger against Marou Amadou and calls on you to urge the authorities in Niger to ensure his physical and psychological integrity.
